# How much to save each month for a savings goal

To find how much to save each month, subtract what you have already saved from your target, then divide by the number of months until your deadline. For a $3,000 goal with nothing saved and 12 months to go, that is $3,000 divided by 12, so $250 a month.

## How to work out how much to save each month

1. **Set the target:** Decide the total amount the goal needs, including any known extra costs.
2. **Pick the deadline:** Choose the date you need the money by and count the whole months until then.
3. **Subtract what you already have:** Take away any amount you have already saved toward the goal.
4. **Divide by the months left:** Divide the remaining amount by the number of months. That is your monthly amount.
5. **Check it against your budget:** If the monthly amount is too high, move the deadline later or lower the target, then recalculate.

## What is the formula for a monthly savings amount?

Monthly amount = (target − already saved) ÷ months left. Use whole months from today to the deadline. For weekly saving, divide by the number of weeks instead, and for every-two-weeks saving, divide by the number of fortnights.

## How much should I save each month for a $5,000 goal?

It depends on the deadline: $5,000 in 10 months is $500 a month, and $5,000 in 24 months is about $208 a month. Each extra month on the deadline lowers the monthly amount, but slows the goal.

*Monthly amount for common goals with nothing saved yet*

| Target | Months | Per month | Per week (about) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| $1,200 | 12 | $100 | $23.08 |
| $3,000 | 12 | $250 | $57.69 |
| $5,000 | 10 | $500 | $115.38 |
| $5,000 | 12 | $416.67 | $96.15 |
| $5,000 | 24 | $208.33 | $48.08 |

Weekly figures assume 52 weeks to a year, so $250 a month over 12 months works out to about $57.69 a week.

## What if I already have some money saved?

Subtract it first. For a $5,000 goal with $1,000 already saved and 10 months left, you need $4,000 more, which is $400 a month. Starting balances are the quickest way to shorten a plan.

## What if my income changes from month to month?

Pick the amount for your leanest typical month, and treat anything extra as a head start. If you save more in a good month, the remaining months need less. Recalculate whenever the remaining amount changes.

## How do I make the monthly amount smaller?

- Move the deadline later: 24 months instead of 12 halves the monthly amount
- Lower the target: remove costs you can cover another way
- Start with a lump sum: any money you already have counts against the target

## How can Goaley do this for me?

Goaley: Savings Goal Tracker runs this sum for every goal. You enter the target and deadline, and it shows the next amount, the dated schedule and whether you are on track. See [how the savings plan works](https://trygoaley.app/features/savings-plan). Run your own numbers in the [savings goal calculator](https://trygoaley.app/savings-goal-calculator) first if you want to test a few deadlines.
